Don’t Call Me Daughter examines the effects of a damaged inner child through images and
videos. The work reflects how a damaged inner child continues to shape emotional
response, memory, and vulnerability long after childhood has passed. This body of work is
inspired by my personal experience with a toxic parent and considers how early dynamics
continue to shape emotional responses into adulthood.
The series of videos shows the behavior of the parental figure, while the photographs on
the wall and on the TV in the form of stickers reflect the child’s reactions and the long-term
effects of the trauma. The use of stickers and stop-motion videos reference the
playfulness of childhood, which creates a visual contrast between innocence and harm.
